Slow But Sure Weekly Traffic Increase

October 11, 2009

Since I have begun blogging here on my personal blog more regularly, my weekly visitor traffic has steadily increased.

Even without a unifying singular theme to this site, it appears disciplined daily posting to a blog has a compound effect on its ability to produce traffic.

WordPress Post To Twitter But No Twitter Tweets To WordPress

October 10, 2009

Several months ago I asked WordPress.com when I would be able to Tweet directly from my WordPress.com blogs.

WordPress has answered my question with their recent Publicize feature which Tweets posts like this one directly to a Twitter account.

WordPress users are rapidly adopting the new service as evidenced by the number of Tweets containing the WordPress Tweet signature – “Posted to WP.com.”

Any Tweet that begins with “Posted to WP.com was posted by a WordPress.com blogger.

At the same time I asked WordPress about being able to directly Tweet my blog posts, I also asked about how I could post to my WordPress account directly from my Twitter account.

I came up with some work arounds to get it done using the Bit.ly url shortener service, but the process required more energy than I cared to expend.

So Twitter and WordPress, when will I be able to send my Tweets to my WordPress blog to publish and “publicize” them via WordPress just like I can now publish and then “publicize” my WordPress blog posts to Twitter?

YouTube: Now Serving 1 Billion Views A Day

October 9, 2009

Chad Hurley CEO and Co-founder of YouTube announced today on the YouTube blog, his firm which has now been a part of Google for three years – has been serving well over 1,000,000,000 views a day.

To commemorate this outstanding achievement, YouTube has added “1 billion view per day!” to their logo.

YouTube 1 Billion Views A Day

YouTube 1 Billion Views A Day

According to Hurly, some of the basic principles YouTube was originally committed to have become tenets in the world of online video:

  • Speed matters: Videos should load and play back quickly.
  • Clip culture is here to stay: Short clips are voraciously consumed and perfect for watching a wide variety of content.
  • Open platforms open up possibility: Content creation isn’t our business; it’s yours. We wanted to create a place where anyone with a video camera, a computer, and an Internet connection could share their life, art, and voice with the world, and in many cases make a living from doing so.

Where else but on the web could a such a young business deliver 1,000,000,000 units of anything?

Posted to WP.com: Tweeting From WordPress

October 8, 2009

WordPress has finally made Tweeting blog posts directly to Twitter possible.

I have already written about my first WordPress direct to Twitter blog post  over on SearchMarketingCommunications.com.

1st WordPress Blog Post Tweeted To Twitter

1st WordPress Blog Post Tweeted To Twitter

As expected, WordPress converts all of the WordPress.com blogs posted to Twitter to their recently added shortened url service – WP.me.

I wasn’t the first one to Tweet from WordPress.com as evidenced by all of these posts found in a Twitter search for “Posted to WP.com”.

In addition to their My blog Admin page, WordPress.com bloggers can also find an Authorize Twitter link on the right rail of their add new post page.

WordPress bloggers probably ought to save a draft and preview their post before they publish it to make sure the post’s title doesn’t need to be changed which in turn would render the post’s WP.me shortened url moot.

Google Omitted From Microsoft Spell Checker?

October 7, 2009

I was proofing a document today in Microsoft Word and while Word correctly marked Google as potentially misspelled word, I was surprised Word offered no corrections or spelling suggestions.

Google not in Microsoft Spell Check Dictionary

Google not in Microsoft Spell Check Dictionary

Apparently, Google has not yet been added to Microsoft Word’s spell checker dictionary.

I guess its understandable since Google is a relatively new (and made up) brand name.

Funny though… Microsoft – another recognizable technology ( and made up) brand name – is in Microsoft’s spell checker for misspellings of Microsoft.

I am sure Google’s omission from Microsoft’s Word dictionary was just an oversight.

Google Fading Homepage

October 6, 2009

Google has begun testing a delayed home page display of additional links for both Google searchers and Google account holders.

Instead of landing on a Google page like the one below –

Regular Google Homepage

Google users are instead greeted by a link free page.

Google Fade Page

Google Fade Page

The delayed display of links is somewhat novel, but as the day wears on attempts to access gmail and other Google services after having waited for five to twenty seconds to get to a clickable link have grown time consuming and bothersome.

Yes – the delayed display of links will otherwise focus Google users’ attention on Google’s homepage and its understated simplicity something Google’s users may have been taking for granted.

Will doing so at some point aggrevate Google’s audience?

Yes.

It may however be a brilliant public relations move by Google.

When their “test” is over, how many seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years in man hours will have been spent staring at Google’s logo and reinforcing their brand in their audience’s collective mind?

Creating A Twitter Trending Topics Archive

October 5, 2009

This Twitter account (MemChip) automates the Trending Topics feed and then Tweets the results to the Twitter audience once every ten minutes.

It takes some concentration to parse each Trending Topic from the Tweet but there are ten subjects in each Tweet.

I have created an archive of Twitter’s Trending Topics by grabbing the RSS feed and sending it to my Google Reader.

Although reviewing the contents of Twitter’s Trending Topics Tweet Stream once daily is more than enough to cause stream fatigue, I find the process and results quite instructive.

Sitemaps No Errors

October 4, 2009

I bought the domain mapping service from WordPress some time ago which in turn posts all of my posts from the TimCohn.Wordpress.com blog address to TimothyCohn.com .

As recommended, I also added Google Webmaster Tools to the site to monitor and measure how well this site is performing in Google.

I recently received a notification the site map submitted by WordPress was not being correctly read.

I resubmitted the Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools and shortly thereafter I received the following data in Webmaster Tools dashboard.

As of October 4th, the sitemap.xml submission for TimothyCohn.com has been successful.

Questionable Google OneBox Local Search Results

October 3, 2009

Their have been many reports recently of Google showing unusual Onebox results for general category keyword searches.

I have found at least twenty so far.

The following OneBox result for Billboards in Denver not only delivers a single business listing, it delivers a business called New Orleans Billboard Ads.

Whatever Google did recently to deliver these types single listing results needs to be revisited.

Switchers: An Interesting Ad Positioning Statement

October 2, 2009

I saw this display ad while searching Dictionary.com for definitions.

Positioning Statement

Positioning Statement

With the exception of disruptive category creating new products, companies and their products or services compete within existing and usually for previously won market shares.

Thus a solid strategy for both new and old competitors alike to begin the process of moving buyers to their product from another producer’s product is to try and reach potential “switchers”.

Switchers are consumers who already buy like products or services from existing (uusually) market share leaders but who are unsatisfied with their present provider.

All switchers are looking for are enough good reasons for them to justify dropping their present supplier in favor of a new one.

At a minimum, an alternative provider must supply an equal or greater value experience.

Ideally the new provider must promise an experience significantly more valuable in order to earn the belief and trust that is requisite for switchers to switch.

The above picture makes such a promise.

Whether or not the product advertised can deliver on its promise or not isn’t necessary at this stage in the switching process.

The purpose of switchers ad positioning statement is simply to get the attention of prospective new buyers, ie. switchers which in the case above – it did.
