Total Tweets Off; Way Off

February 5, 2010

When I logged into my Twitter account today I discovered the total number of Tweets displayed in my account were 200% greater than the number of Tweets I have actually posted.

Last I recall I had around 3,500 Tweets.

Based on this new Twitter stat, I guess I am now much more prolific than I was just one day ago.

News To Yahoo: Branded Cursing

January 19, 2010

Yahoo News wouldn’t normally care whether its brand name was mixed in with this Twitter user’s other tweets.

Branded Cursing

Branded Cursing

Yet, I am pretty sure they aren’t going to be publishing news on their new blog network featuring stories laced with curse words any time soon.

Even I, a lowly rather unimaginative blogger can crank out Tweets and Blog posts free of cuss words.

You would think a Harvard graduate could too…

I guess anything goes in Web 2.0.

The People Have Tweeted: The Tweet As An Endorsement

December 21, 2009

In today’s Wall Street Journal there is a full page ad from a gum manufacturer featuring Twitter Tweets as “endoresments” of their product.

The ad  begins with “The people have Tweeted.”

The ad then features Tweets that speak highly of their gum brand from ten different Twitter accounts.

The People Have Tweeted

The People Have Tweeted

Readers are then encouraged to follow the brand @ Twiter.com/tridentlayers

I wonder if Trident had to get permission from each of the Tweeters to use their Tweet in their promotional materials or if the Tweeters were compensated for endorsing Trident Layers?

Time permitting, I am going to contact each of them and see if they were even aware their Tweets had been used in a full page Wall Street Journal ad or not.

The following ten Twitter accounts endorsed Trident Layers gum.

MsCalcote, eddahlen, warob, cameron_crazy, xstandforitx, mattchew03, amybites, FitBottomedGirl, melissakmurray and lollieshopping.

I sure hope for Trident’s sake they alerted these Tweeters first (not me) about using their Tweets and that none of the above Twitterers are employees, friends or family members of any of their ad agencies.

Twitter Updates Now Live in Linkedin Accounts

November 11, 2009

Today I received the following email from Linkedin.

Twitter Updates in Linkedin

Twitter Updates in Linkedin

Although I don’t actively use my Linkedin account, I try to keep up with any new functionality or features.

Setting up Twitter within my Linkedin was easy to do.

After logging into your Linkedin account, go to the add applications portion of your home page and find the Tweets application.

About the Tweets application:

With Tweets, you can now display your most recent tweets on your LinkedIn profile. Tweets also gives you instant access to the updates of people you are following on Twitter and the power to tweet, reply, and re-tweet — all from your LinkedIn home page.

Click add application to integrate Twitter account into your Linkedin profile.

You’ll then be taken to a  Get started with Tweets page.

Click add your Twitter account.

Linkedin will then take you to a Twitter authorization page.

Twitter Linkedin

Twitter Linkedin

Allowing Linkedin will then integrate your Twitter account Tweets into your Linkedin profile.

Once added, Linkedin gives their account holders the option whether  to display their Twitter identity on their Linkedin profile or not.

All Tweets can be displayed or just those with #IN or #Li hashtags.

A Twitter account holder’s most recent Tweets then supply the Linkedin profile update.

It will be interesting to see what if anything occurs as a result of my having added my Tweets to my Linkedin profile.

Twitter.com Displaying “New Tweets”

November 6, 2009

I noticed Twitter.com is now displaying the number of new Tweets that occur in between page refreshes and views over the web.

Twitter.com New Tweets

Twitter.com New Tweets

Previously, Twitter users who viewed their accounts on the web wouldn’t  have any idea how many Tweets had been made in between the time they viewed one page from the next.

With the Tweet Stream growing ever more volumunous for active Twitter users, this simple improvement may help prevent Stream Fatigue or cause more of it.

WordPress Post To Twitter But No Twitter Tweets To WordPress

October 10, 2009

Several months ago I asked WordPress.com when I would be able to Tweet directly from my WordPress.com blogs.

WordPress has answered my question with their recent Publicize feature which Tweets posts like this one directly to a Twitter account.

WordPress users are rapidly adopting the new service as evidenced by the number of Tweets containing the WordPress Tweet signature – “Posted to WP.com.”

Any Tweet that begins with “Posted to WP.com was posted by a WordPress.com blogger.

At the same time I asked WordPress about being able to directly Tweet my blog posts, I also asked about how I could post to my WordPress account directly from my Twitter account.

I came up with some work arounds to get it done using the Bit.ly url shortener service, but the process required more energy than I cared to expend.

So Twitter and WordPress, when will I be able to send my Tweets to my WordPress blog to publish and “publicize” them via WordPress just like I can now publish and then “publicize” my WordPress blog posts to Twitter?

Donald Trump Brand Dilution

August 25, 2009

I thought I had seen all of the possible businesses Donald Trump could lend his name to from Trump Water to Trump University but this one takes the cake.

Donald Trump Network Marketer

Donald Trump Network Marketer

I had seen several Tweets pushing a similar message and thought the Tweets might have been exaggerated.

However, if there are ads running the same message – it must be true!

I think there are two takeaways from Donald Trump’s latest business venture:

1. A brand can over extend itself and stray far enough from its place in the consumer’s mind as to actually lose its place in the consumer’s mind – thereby diluting any brand equity it may have had.

2. There is no easier mark than a salesman.

I would have loved to have witnessed the process where the network marketer who sold Donald Trump on lending his name to a multi-level marketing scheme closed that deal – it had to have been a doozy.

Good luck Donald Trump Network Marketing Company!

Microbroadcast to Engage Your Audience or Not…

August 21, 2009

Since I was on Twitter before they launched their verified accounts, I hadn’t followed many if any of their recommended accounts.

Somehow I came across Dane Cook’s account and decided to follow him.

Tonight I saw he posted a Bubble Tweet, so I thought I would check it out.

Bubble Tweet

Bubble Tweet

When I went to view his Bubble Tweet however, I was somewhat disappointed because he used the Bubble Tweet format to tell his Twitter audience that the news he promised earlier and elsewhere wasn’t forthcoming in his Bubble Tweet or anywhere else for that matter tonight – but somewhere else at another time.

Twitter MicroBroadcasting

Twitter MicroBroadcasting

Granted, Cook did say something kind of funny in his Bubble Tweet but other than that his post had little substance or entertainment value.

I understand Twitter and its related apps are still in the early stages of development, but I think everybody who is successful in maintaining their audiences attention on Twitter stays on topic and engages their audience through consistent messaging.

They do it by consistently delivering on topic and not wasting the time and attention of those who cared enough to sign up for their Tweets in the first place.

Such did not appear to be the case tonight with Cook’s rather vacuous Bubble Tweet.

Twitter Down: Tweets DDOS Distributed Denial of Service Visualized

August 6, 2009

As every web user of Twitter.com knows by now, Twitter has been offline and inaccessible to web Tweeters.

The following graph from Nathan Reed illustrates the drop in Tweeting that has occurred as a result of the Twitter.com DDOS attack.

Twitter’s Tweet Stream effectively dried up during the DDOS Attach according to Reed’s Tweet per Hour chart.
