The Power of @Twitter

May 8, 2019

After having written thousands of blogs posts in the mid 2000s, its been over five years since I have posted anything here.

If and when I write, I have been “writing” on Twitter.

When I signed up for Twitter in February of 2008, I thought it would be a much better platform for making new contacts than the other social media platforms available at the time which were primarily MySpace, Friendster and Facebook.

After years of building out my Twitter network, my initial thoughts about the potential power of Twitter to connect with the difficult to reach have since proven correct.

How else could I connect with the CEO of Google let alone have him share my Wall Street Journal tweet with his two million followers?

In this day and age of instant communication, not from a traditional blog post.

Sorry WordPress.

Nuclear Follow Cost?

November 11, 2010

I noticed on my mobile a Twitter service called Follow Cost and thought I would check it out.

Follow Cost publishes a Twitter account’s average number of updates over time along with a recent updates number.

As you can see below, my average Tweets per day over the life of my Twitter account has been 13.72 Tweets a day while recently my Tweeting frequency has increased to 235.45 Tweets a day.

This in turn has caused Follow Cost to declare following me on Twitter to have a “Nuclear Follow Cost”.

FollowCost.com measures its Twitter following costs in units called Milliscobles.

The definition of a Milliscoble from FollowCost.com

Milliscoble

With my recent updates score of 11101.1 milliscobles,  I don’t whether I should be alarmed or relieved.

Twitter Exploit: The Maxi-Tweet

August 14, 2010

Today the following Tweet has been retweeted by over 100 people.

Nothing unusual about being retweeted – what is unusual is the length of the original Tweet.

As you can see, it far exceeds the 140 character limit.

Here is the Maxi-Tweet in its entirety:

In the beginning 荒川智則 created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. 荒川智則’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.荒川智則 said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 荒川智則 saw the light, and saw that it was good. 荒川智則 divided the light from the darkness. 荒川智則 called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning, one day.荒川智則 said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”荒川智則 made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. 荒川智則 called the expanse “sky.” There was evening and there was morning, a second day.荒川智則 said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 荒川智則 called the dry land “earth,” and the gathering together of the waters he called “seas.” 荒川智則 saw that it was good.荒川智則 said, “Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it, on the earth”; and it was so.The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with its seed in it, after their kind; and 荒川智則 saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a third day.荒川智則 said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of sky to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 荒川智則 made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 荒川智則 set them in the expanse of sky to give light to the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. 荒川智則 saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.荒川智則 said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky.” 荒川智則 created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. 荒川智則 saw that it was good. 1:22 荒川智則 blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.荒川智則 said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind”; and it was so. 荒川智則 made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. 荒川智則 saw that it was good.荒川智則 said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.荒川智則 created man in his own image. In 荒川智則’s image he created him; male and female he created them. 荒川智則 blessed them. 荒川智則 said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.荒川智則 said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food. 1:30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food and it was so.荒川智則 saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. In the beginning 荒川智則 created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Fake Steven Slater Twitter Accounts

August 12, 2010

Steven Slater the Jet Blue flight attendant who recently “quit his job” appears to have set up a Twitter account.

As of this moment, the “real” Steven Slater has 469 followers.

Steven Slater

Steven Slater

A “Fake Slater” Twitter account has been established as well. However,  the Fake Slater account has 0 followers.

It appears knowing a Twitter account is fake doesn’t compel audience engagement.

Even though the first Steven Slater Twitter account appears to be legitimate – its not.

http://Twitter.com/StevenSlater is a a fake Twitter account too.

How do I know?

The picture “Steven Slater” provided of himself in the “real” Steven Slater Twitter account was scraped from the Wall Street Journal online – not from his own personal photo collection.

Highly unlikely and uncharacteristic of such a mellow fellow like Steven Slater – don’t you think?

Back to the drawing board – Twitter poser….

To combat cases like this, Twitter has established its Impersonation Policy.

Bing Social Beta

June 21, 2010

I was searching for Summer Solstice today in Google and saw a Tweet in their real time search results from “Bing Social”.

Having never heard of Bing Social, I thought I would investigate further.

Bing Social

Sure enough, clicking through took me to the Bing Social Beta site.

Bing Social Beta

The Bing Social site is where Microsoft collects and posts the “Hottest Social Topics” from both Twitter and Facebook.

While the topics featured in Bing Social may be hot, Microsoft is most likely using the social media streams to flesh out its fledgling search index.

Whether the hot social topics Bing or any other search engine for that matter feature have any shelf life beyond the moment remains to be seen.

With Google Follow Finder, simply enter your Twitter account name and you’ll see a list of people you might be interested in following. You can also get interesting suggestions by entering other Twitter user names. Here’s what it looks like:

If you see someone you want to follow, just click “Follow on Twitter,” log in, and they’ll be added to your following list in Twitter. This integration is based on Twitter’s new @anywhere frameworks, which make it easy for any site to add Twitter functionality. Even I, a lowly rather unimaginative blogger can crank out Tweets and Blog posts free of cuss words.

You would think a Harvard graduate could too…

I guess anything goes in Web 2.0.

The gift certificate’s headline and promise are disingenuous because the $10 gift certificate’s $4 purchase price is only valid when used toward a minimum food purchase of $20.00.
