#w2s Web 2.0 Summit and Bing Twitter Real Time Search Results

October 24, 2009

I virtually attended my second conference this year – the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco – over the last several days.

I previously attended the AlwaysOn Summit at Stanford where I began developing my strategy for virtually attending conferences from the convenience of my laptop.

The cool thing about virtual attendance of conferences is that regardless of where I am at in the world at the time of the conference – I can “virtually attend” via those who are actually attending.

Its pretty efficient because I don’t have to hop on a plane and spend several days traveling to and from an event.

More importantly,  I can attend events while also remaining focused on my primary work almost without interruption.

Also, I can do all of this without having to watch hours of video or read through a bunch of transcripts or blogs to figure out what was said by who.

How?

By grabbing all of a conference’s original Tweets.

Its not perfect, but I have found all of a conference’s gems are best surfaced in Tweets by those audience members in attendance.

Granted, there are some semantic issues from one Tweeter’s Tweet to the next but even having different transcriptions produces value.

Once I have grabbed all of a conference’s Tweets, I read all of them and determine which ones best captured the speaker’s point.

After that, I assemble a list of the top 50 or 100 Tweets and publish them in a WordPress blog.

The top 50 Tweets from the Web 2.0 Summit 09.

With the new WordPress “publicize” feature, I then Tweet them to my Twitter account.

This process accomplishes at least two things:

1. The WordPress blog post and its content eventually gets crawled and then indexed in Google search engine results pages.

2. The Tweets get grabbed and published in real time by search engines like @Bing.com/Twitter.

Bing Twitter #w2s

Bing Twitter #w2s

As you can see from the screen shot above, my Top 50 Tweets post from #w2s @SearchMarketingCommunications.com were grabbed by Bing.com/Twitter and placed under the most recent Tweets about #w2s.

Further down the page, Bing.com/Twitter then provides a list of top links shared in Tweets about the keyword Tweeted.

In this case, my Top 50 Tweets from the Web 2.0 Summit 2009 post reached the seventh position on this particular Bing results page for #w2s.

Publishing this blog post will in turn push this blog into the most recent Tweets for the same keyword again.

Customize Publicized WordPress Tweet Messages

October 17, 2009

I have enabled all of my WordPress blogs to post directly from my dashboard directly to my Twitter account.

Each WordPress blog posted to Twitter begins with “posted to WP.com”.

Today I discovered a link within my WordPress publish box for editing publicized Twitter posts.

Edit WordPress Tweet Messages

I am not sure whether the “posted to WP.com” Tweet introduction can be edited out or not but being able to add additional comments to Tweets should help make the theme and content of a each Tweeted WordPress blog post more clear to its audience.

If Social Media Were Effective, It Wouldn’t Be Free

October 15, 2009

Today’s thought for the day about the emergence of social media as a business platform:

If social media like Facebook and Twitter were effective at generating business for businesses large or small – “social media” wouldn’t be free.

To take a step further it wouldn’t have been labeled social media – it would be called simply “media”.

Thus “social media” is really code for don’t count on its use producing any revenue for your business.

There – I said it.

WordPress Post To Twitter But No Twitter Tweets To WordPress

October 10, 2009

Several months ago I asked WordPress.com when I would be able to Tweet directly from my WordPress.com blogs.

WordPress has answered my question with their recent Publicize feature which Tweets posts like this one directly to a Twitter account.

WordPress users are rapidly adopting the new service as evidenced by the number of Tweets containing the WordPress Tweet signature – “Posted to WP.com.”

Any Tweet that begins with “Posted to WP.com was posted by a WordPress.com blogger.

At the same time I asked WordPress about being able to directly Tweet my blog posts, I also asked about how I could post to my WordPress account directly from my Twitter account.

I came up with some work arounds to get it done using the Bit.ly url shortener service, but the process required more energy than I cared to expend.

So Twitter and WordPress, when will I be able to send my Tweets to my WordPress blog to publish and “publicize” them via WordPress just like I can now publish and then “publicize” my WordPress blog posts to Twitter?

Creating A Twitter Trending Topics Archive

October 5, 2009

This Twitter account (MemChip) automates the Trending Topics feed and then Tweets the results to the Twitter audience once every ten minutes.

Twitter MemChip

Twitter MemChip

It takes some concentration to parse each Trending Topic from the Tweet but there are ten subjects in each Tweet.

I have created an archive of Twitter’s Trending Topics by grabbing the RSS feed and sending it to my Google Reader.

Google Reader RSS Feed

Although reviewing the contents of Twitter’s Trending Topics Tweet Stream once daily is more than enough to cause stream fatigue, I find the process and results quite instructive.

Associated Press on Twitter?

August 24, 2009

The Associated Press has had an account with Twitter for a little over a month now.

Associated Press on Twitter

Associated Press on Twitter

Sometime ago I suggested whoever controls Twitter will control the news.

I wonder what the Associated Press would think about my thesis?

Since they haven’t Tweeted much since they opened their account, I wonder if they are working on finalizing their corporate social media policy before they engage Twitter’s services any further?

Microbroadcast to Engage Your Audience or Not…

August 21, 2009

Since I was on Twitter before they launched their verified accounts, I hadn’t followed many if any of their recommended accounts.

Somehow I came across Dane Cook’s account and decided to follow him.

Tonight I saw he posted a Bubble Tweet, so I thought I would check it out.

Bubble Tweet

Bubble Tweet

When I went to view his Bubble Tweet however, I was somewhat disappointed because he used the Bubble Tweet format to tell his Twitter audience that the news he promised earlier and elsewhere wasn’t forthcoming in his Bubble Tweet or anywhere else for that matter tonight – but somewhere else at another time.

Twitter MicroBroadcasting

Twitter MicroBroadcasting

Granted, Cook did say something kind of funny in his Bubble Tweet but other than that his post had little substance or entertainment value.

I understand Twitter and its related apps are still in the early stages of development, but I think everybody who is successful in maintaining their audiences attention on Twitter stays on topic and engages their audience through consistent messaging.

They do it by consistently delivering on topic and not wasting the time and attention of those who cared enough to sign up for their Tweets in the first place.

Such did not appear to be the case tonight with Cook’s rather vacuous Bubble Tweet.

When Will I Be Able To Tweet My WordPress Posts Directly To Twitter?

August 16, 2009

WordPress recently introduced a new url shortening feature to the blogging community called “Get Shortlink”.

Wordpress Get Shortlink

Wordpress Get Shortlink

WordPress bloggers can now get a shortened url for each of their WordPress blog posts by simply clicking the “Get Shortlink” button next to each of their post’s Permalink addresses.

The new url shortening feature from WordPress will save bloggers time and several keystrokes when Tweeting their most recent blog post to their Twitter account.

Great new feature Matt!
