Domain Renewal Problems Update

August 30, 2009

In a previous post, I wrote about my domain renewal problems with a registrar who hasn’t responded to my emails or returned my phone calls about their website not processing renewal orders.

It appears I have already lost one excellent domain and others are at risk.

I wrote the post in hopes it would be discovered by someone who could help me get my domains renewed and out of the control of what appears now to be a defunct registrar agent.

Indeed within twelve hours of writing about the problems I was experiencing, I was contacted by someone offering to help solve my domain registrar problems.

At this point it looks like my domain registration headaches may be over.

If so, I will report who helped me solve my domain registrar problem, how they did it and what others who may have experienced the same problem can hope to solve theirs.

Domain Registrar Complaint

August 29, 2009

Several of my domains are with a domain reseller who hasn’t renewed their site’s security certificate.

Consequently, I haven’t been able to renew my domains online and the regsistrar won’t return my phone calls, emails or respond to a trouble ticket I submitted several weeks ago.

As it turns out, the “registrar” who isn’t allowing me to renew my domains is actually a reseller for Tucows.

I submitted a complaint today to ICANN about the registrar.

I also contacted Tucows “customer service” to see what their procedures are for remedying problems like mine caused by their customers.

In an auto response email, Tucows said they would get back to me with 24 hours.

I am looking forward to seeing how my domain renewal problem will be resolved to my satisfaction.

Correction 09-01-09: After several email conversations with the proactive staff from Tucows, it was determined my domain registrar SRS Renewals is an affiliate of Network Solutions not Tucows. Tucows has several resellers with similarly spelled names with SRS in their title. Thanks to Bill Sweetman from Tucows for all of his efforts to try solving a problem that wasn’t ultimately his problem to solve.

This blog’s monthly visits are seeing an increase with each new blog post.

However, I think switching the WordPress subdomain to a private domain via their domain mapping service ultimately cost the site more traffic than what it would have enjoyed as a subdomain otherwise.

Nielsen Product Placement Recall Score Cracked

August 26, 2009

Nielsen IAG released its Top 10 Most Recalled In-Program Placements focused on brand/product placements that occurred in new summer series on the broadcast networks during the July 13 to August 16 period.

Nielsen’s definition of their Recall Score:

The percentage of television viewers who can recall within 24 hours the brand/product of an In-Program placement they were exposed to during the normal course of viewing new summer series. These scores are then indexed against the mean score for all placements occurring in these programs during the time period (Recall Index). 100 equals average.

Recall Score: In Program Product Placements

As you can see from their list, Coinstar far outdistanced the other brands.

Was it because their brand demanded more viewer attention than the other brands?

Or was it because the show’s setting was more conducive for creating the context necessary for brand recall?

An interesting footnote from Nielsen about their Recall Score:

For this analysis, In-Program placements were only considered if the occurrence had visual elements (i.e., was “seen” on-screen) or both visual and auditory elements (i.e., was both “seen” and “mentioned”). Only first-run episodes were considered. Both planned and incidental exposures were included.

I think it would be instructive for Nielsen to delineate their recall scores by which brands had either a visual brand cue or both visual and auditory brand cues.

By the looks and sound of Nielsen’s summer series period results however its obvious to me Coinstar placed first because it employed both visual and auditory brand cues – not just one.

Cha-Ching!

Donald Trump Brand Dilution

August 25, 2009

I thought I had seen all of the possible businesses Donald Trump could lend his name to from Trump Water to Trump University but this one takes the cake.

Donald Trump Network Marketer

I had seen several Tweets pushing a similar message and thought the Tweets might have been exaggerated.

However, if there are ads running the same message – it must be true!

I think there are two takeaways from Donald Trump’s latest business venture:

1. A brand can over extend itself and stray far enough from its place in the consumer’s mind as to actually lose its place in the consumer’s mind – thereby diluting any brand equity it may have had.

2. There is no easier mark than a salesman.

I would have loved to have witnessed the process where the network marketer who sold Donald Trump on lending his name to a multi-level marketing scheme closed that deal – it had to have been a doozy.

Good luck Donald Trump Network Marketing Company!

Associated Press on Twitter?

August 24, 2009

The Associated Press has had an account with Twitter for a little over a month now.

Sometime ago I suggested whoever controls Twitter will control the news.

I wonder what the Associated Press would think about my thesis?

Since they haven’t Tweeted much since they opened their account, I wonder if they are working on finalizing their corporate social media policy before they engage Twitter’s services any further?
