Help Improve Google Voice Transcription Quality

December 10, 2009

Google Voice automatically transcribes voicemail messages so Google Voice users can get a sense of what messages are about without needing to listen to them. The automated process sometimes works great, sometimes not so well.

According to the Google Voice blog:

Google Voice automatically transcribes voicemail messages so you can get a sense of what messages are about without needing to listen to them. The automated process sometimes works great, sometimes not so well.

And this is where you can help by “donating” some of your voicemail messages. Until now, the only feedback you could give was to let us know if the quality of the transcript was good enough to be useful or not, by checking the corresponding box next to the message. You can now go one step further by letting us figure out why it was good or bad. When you rate a transcript, you will be asked whether you would like to donate the message. You have three options:

Messages donated to Google may be listened to, manually transcribed and/or used to gauge transcription improvements over time, but will never be made public or used for any other purpose than improving the transcription quality.

My experience with Google Voice transcriptions has been surprisingly accurate compared to the other voice to text transcription services I have tried.

I have donated the transcript below to help Google Voice improve its transcription accuracy.

Google Apps Cross Promoting To Local Business Center Users

December 9, 2009

I received the first cross promotion pitch I can recall getting from one Google product group for another.

In this this case, my Google Local Business Center account information was used to pitch Google Apps Premier Edition to my business.

Google Local Business Center users can try Google Apps for a free 30-day trial period.

After 30 days, Google Apps Premiere Edition runs $50 per user per year.

Interested businesses can calculate the potential savings to switch from another messaging service provider to Google Apps with a Cost Savings Calculator.

In the above example, Google Apps provides a compelling cost benefit analysis for switching from Microsoft Exchange 2007 to Google’s Premier Edition.

Popeye Google Doodle

December 8, 2009

If Google’s home page could talk it would say today “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.”

Since Google’s home page voice hasn’t yet been enabled – we are still in the silent search days – I will be Google’s Voice and say it for you and for them – I’m Popeye the Sailor Man.

Google is celebrating the 115th anniversary of E.C. Segar’s birthday by featuring his Popeye creation on their homepage.

Elzie Crisler Segar’s Popeye first appeared in his newspaper comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929.

Through his cartoon strip Popeye inadvertently became the most famous advocate and voice for eating spinach.

Google Webmaster Tools Site Performance

December 4, 2009

What’s the downside to using your own domain and WordPress’ domain mapping service?

A website that is slower than 100% of all other websites.

From Google’s new Webmaster Tools Site Performance tool:

On average, pages in your site take 38.3 seconds to load (updated on Dec 3, 2009). This is slower than 100% of sites. The chart below shows how your site’s average page load time has changed over the last few months. For your reference, it also shows the 20th percentile value across all sites, separating slow and fast load times.

Google Adwords Coupons Limit One Per Customer

December 3, 2009

I have discovered at least two instances where Google Adwords coupons are not redeemable.

1. The coupons are limited to one per Google Adwords customer.

2. Accounts older than two weeks old are too old to redeem coupons for Google Adwords.

Why Google Local Business Center Languishes

December 2, 2009

Disincentives outweigh incentives for Google to improve their free business listing product – the Local Business Center (LBC).

Although Google may have a responsibility to publish correct, up to date business listing data, the publishing of comprehensive free business listing data is diametrically opposed to its business purpose – locating and then selling access to organized business information via sponsored links.

If Google took all of the work out of being locatable via search, why would businesses then pay Google to be found?
