Google Adwords Ad Location Extension Sample

July 8, 2010

While Ad Location Extensions have been available in Google Adwords for some time, I hadn’t yet tried them until today.

It doesn’t take much time to add a location Extensions to an Adwords campaign.

Location Extensions can be synced with a Google Places account if you have one, or if not you can create a business listing address on the fly to display along with your ad.

In either case, Location Extensions can help differentiate local advertisers from regional or national advertisers at a time the local Google Adwords advertiser can benefit most – when the Google user is looking for a local solution.

Looking for a quick way to discover inefficient automatic Google Display Network placements?

If so, drilling down into the Exclusions tab – Campaign level – Add exclusions – Exclude Category will produce a list of the types of content sites that have been sending you traffic and at what cost.

Financial Times Copyright Notice

July 6, 2010

I was reading an article on the FT.com website and found the following copyright notice at the bottom unique and somewhat compelling:

Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2010. You may share using our article tools. Please don’t cut articles from FT.com and redistribute by email or post to the web.

The FT.com Copyright term is linked to the Financial Times Services and Tools / Help page.

Does the Financial Times simply asking its readers not to cut or redistribute its content actually keep readers from doing so?

I don’t know.

What I do know is that if you don’t ask – how can you receive?

Trying To Mix The Creative With The Logical

July 5, 2010

After having been working on creative projects for the last several days, I have found it very difficult to get back into the business of logic.

It seems the two are not capable of occupying the same byte stream at the same time – its got to be one or the other.

I’m still trying to figure out how to be both creative and transactional at the same time.

I have found being able to iterate content by hand whether the written word or images with the ability to save each version digitally has helped significantly improve my output quality.

Apple iAds Launched: Engage. Captivate. Connect.

July 1, 2010

The much ballyhooed launch of Apple iAds, Apple’s new advertising product has begun with the following slogan: Engage, Captivate, Connect.

I couldn’t have described the purpose of brand advertising better myself.

Problem is… that’s all iAds will ever be – a brand advertising platform.

Why?

Because Apple App users hire apps to do its app job first – not advertise to them.

Apple iAds are no different than any other media trying to capture the attention of its audience.

Engaging the app audience is no guarantee iAds will measurably lift its advertisers brand awareness in the consumers mind any more than any other device or media would.

As much as I love Apple and all of their products – its the only brand of computer, phone or reader I own – their iAds product will do little to disrupt and reshape the mobile advertising marketplace beyond that which its device counterparts are already on track to do.

Google Places: Not So Fast

June 30, 2010

I am glad my business isn’t dependent on Google Places or their local business listing product for search referrals.

If it was, I would have already starved to death.

My Google Local Business Listing has been in a state of purgatory for at least a year.

Today I found the following note in my account regarding the status of my listing.

“This listing needs to reviewed further before appearing on Google. Please allow several weeks.”
