July 18, 2010Domain Offer?
July 17, 2010Public Relations Faux Pas?
July 16, 2010Infrequently I receive emails from a cab service called London Limousines.
I never open them because I am not in London.
I had assumed the emails were coming from a Taxi driver in London I had somehow inadvertently given my email address to.
Not the case.
Today I received another email from London Limo with a headline that piqued my interest – Bad Press.
Its the first time I can recall a business owner sending me an email to tell me they got bad press.
I don’t even know how to categorize somebody who goes out of their way to spread “bad press” about their own business.
His confession is instructive though… it proves just how compelling and impactful word of mouth is as a medium.
Selling A Domain?
July 15, 2010If so, you too might find this particular offer and the accompanying brokerage commission as funny as I did.
The offer was for my domain RetailMarketingPlan.com.
While RetailMarketingPlan.com may have only appraised for $150, an offer of $75 isn’t too laughable.
However, the broker’s 66.7% required sales commission is!
No Sale!
I Write Like… Browser Based Writing Analyis Software
July 14, 2010Ever wonder what your writing sounds like to those who read it?
I hadn’t thought about it much but Coding Memories apparently has.
Their site – I Write Like – is a browser based writing analysis program that compares writing samples with a database of famous authors works.
To give their tool a try, I took my post from yesterday and entered it into the I Write Like app.
To my surprise, I Write Like determined my writing to be like that of science fiction writer Isaac Asimov.
Funny…
Often when I’m writing, it feels like I am trying to take notes in Russian – a language I don’t speak!
Still quite a compliment considering Asimov according to Wikipedia “was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 9,000 letters and postcards.”
Granted, yesterday’s blog post required a little more heavy lifting than a conversational piece so I found another one to test out to see who’s voice I was more likely to sound like on a regular basis.
Surprised again… I Write Like said the piece was similar to something Dan Brown would write.
I am sure if I kept digging I would find less remarkable writing but for now I am going to take I Write Like at their word.
A Simple SWOT Analysis Diagram
July 13, 2010I stumbled onto this SWOT Analysis diagram in Mindjet and thought it was provocative in its simplicity.
This particular graph categorizes strengths and weaknesses as internal characteristics while opportunities and threats are considered external characteristics.
However, can not each set of characteristics also be seen from the other’s perspective i.e,. strengths and weaknesses as external characteristics and opportunities and threats as internal?
In either case, its been my experience the opposing characteristics are ultimately degrees removed from the same characteristic.

Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations Presentation
July 11, 2010I am giving a presentation this Thursday night to small business owners on the subjects of Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations.
While I spent the first ten years of my career practicing each of these fields offline, the last ten years of my professional life have been spent focused on practicing these respective professions online.
It will be interesting to learn whether online communications are considered mission critical let alone important to this group of would be and existing small business owners or not.
