YouTube Instant Search Suggestions

September 10, 2010

On the heels of Google launching Google Instant, Stanford student Feross Aboukhadijeh has created a similar tool for YouTube – YouTube Instant.

I gave it a try for the only term I know to show up as the first result for in YouTube – Google Adwords Professional.

Sure enough, YouTube Instant search suggestions produced a video of yours truly under google adwords prof.

Great thinking and work Feross.

Google Adwords Small Business Center

September 9, 2010

From the Inside Adwords Blog:

Today we’re happy to announce the launch of a new website – the AdWords Small Business Center. Many of you asked for an AdWords resource focused on learning and the top tips for small and medium businesses, and we listened. This new central learning hub allows you to share AdWords best practices and provides the key information you need to know to run a successful AdWords account.

That being said, I wonder if there is anything else Google can do to move the needle any further into the small business market?

Google Instant Indexing

September 8, 2010

I heard an interesting quote from Sergey Brin today during the Google Press conference for their Google Instant search innovation.

I included Brin’s quote – “We want to make Google the third half of your brain” in a blog post and  shortly after publishing it searched Google to see how many news sites had picked up the same quote.

To my surprise, my blog post along with posts from the Wall Street Journal and CNET was indexed almost simultaneously upon publication.

The same can not be said about my blog posts in Yahoo / Bing search results.

Yahoo Indefinite Indexing

Yahoo / Bing’s “8” results came a full hour after posting to my blog, while Google’s 173 results were available at the time of my initial post.

If in search size does matter, Bing search still obviously has its work cut out for it.

Google Ball Doodle

September 7, 2010

Google’s ball doodle log is one of the most dynamic I have seen to date.

Mousing around anywhere on the Google home page outside the search box disperses the many balls that comprise the Google logo.

While the explanation that normally accompanies a Google doodle isn’t readily visible, one thing is for sure – the playful nature of Google’s ball doodle will capture the attention of anyone who happens upon it.

The Geo-Social Contract

September 6, 2010

From Wikipedia:

The notion of the social contract implies that the people give up sovereignty to a government or other authority in order to receive or maintain social order through the rule of law. It can also be thought of as an agreement by the governed on a set of rules by which they are governed.

Hasn’t the internet permanently disrupted the notion of the geo-social contract by reconfiguration and rerouting of the lines of communication?

Google’s Biggest Ad Spenders

From Ad Age:

To @Google ‘s credit, their confidential docs no longer inexplicably appear on the front page of WSJ, they’re instead “leaked” to AdAge.com

Trying Out Flipboard

I have seen some good buzz about Flipboard so I’m going to give it a try.

Digital Word of Mouth Gone Awry

September 3, 2010

Drake University has launched an undergraduate recruitment campaign with the following tag line:

D+  Drake Advantage – your Potential + our Opportunities.

The Drake Advantage?

The Drake Advantage?

Last time I checked, D+ was widely understood to mean below average performance.

An outside PR firm created the D+ campaign and despite being their apprised of their advertising campaign’s obvious incongruity, Drake University officials still agreed to go forward with it.

To their credit, the PR firm did create a buzz worthy advertising campaign. The problem is – its bad buzz.

Don’t take my word for it – just check out Google’s real time search results for Drake University.

Drake University D+ Campaign

Drake University D+ Campaign

Any advertising campaign that creates positive digital word of mouth for an advertiser gets an “A”.

Any advertising campaign that creates a negative parody of your brand gets a minimum grade of “D+”.

After their D+ advertising campaign runs its course, Drake University will be lucky if anyone who heard their D+ message will give them any grade above….. D+.

Google Blog Search Pushed To Search Results Page

September 1, 2010

Google has made discovering subject matter blogs easier by pushing their Blogs search results tab to the left rail of search results pages.

Clicking Blogs produces a list of blogs relevant to the keywords searched.

It appears my Search Marketing Communications blog has somehow been hardwired into the first slot in the above the fold Google search results for “Related blogs about marketing communications”.
